Bring Me the Horizon, often abbreviated to BMTH, is a British rock band. They were founded in 2004 in Sheffield, United Kingdom. The founding members were lead singer Oliver Sykes (born in 1986 in Ashford, United Kingdom), lead guitarist Lee Malia (1987, Sheffield, United Kingdom), drummer Mat Nicholls (1986, Maltby, United Kingdom), and rhythm guitarist Curtis Ward (1986).
The four founding members were all teenage boys living in South Yorkshire, England when they decided to form a band. Malia had been part of a Metallica tribute band before meeting Sykes and Nicholls, who bonded over their shared love for metalcore and hardcore punk. They were soon joined by Ward. Their name comes from a line of dialogue in the 2003 movie "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl", spoken by Captain Jack Sparrow.
They produced an emo album, “Bedroom Sessions”, all on their own. Later, however, their debut EP was released by the British indie record label Thirty Days of Night Records. It came out in September 2004, with the wordy title “This Is What the Edge of Your Seat Was Made For”. Their first EP caught the attention of a bigger indie label, Visible Noise Records, who signed the new band in a four-album deal, while also re-releasing their debut Extended Play. The very first Bring Me the Horizon concert tour was a series of opening acts for the American metal band The Red Chord touring the UK..
BMTH’s first commercially available album came out in October 2006, titled “Count Your Blessings”. It became a moderate hit, peaking at the #93 spot on the OCC chart in the UK.
Since then, the British rock band has released 5 more full studio albums, thus they have 6 in total. The best selling among them is their fourth one, “Sempiternal” released in April 2013, which sold 108,000 copies in their home country of the UK, and an additional 283,000 copies in the US. It was also the first project of theirs that was produced by a major label, the American RCA Records. Meanwhile, the latest new Bring Me the Horizon album came out in January 2019, with the title “Amo”.
Bring Me the Horizon’s biggest hits to date are “Can You Feel My Heart” (2013), “Sleepwalking” (also 2013), “Throne” (2015), and “Drown” (also 2015). Co-founder Ward left the group in 2009 after his bandmates weren’t satisfied with his performances on tour. BMTH’s current line-up consists of the three other co-founders, Sykes on the lead vocals, Malia on the lead guitar, and Nicholls on the drums; as well as Matt Kean on the bass and Jordan Fish on the keyboard and percussions.
