Judas Priest Biography

Judas Priest is an English heavy metal band. They were formed in 1969 in Birmingham, United Kingdom. The founding members were lead vocalist Al Atkins (born in 1947 in West Bromwich, UK), guitarist John Perry, drummer John "Fezza" Partridge, and bassist Brian Stapenhill (1949, West Bromwich, UK).

The 4 musicians, all in their early 20's, formed the new metal band in Birmingham. They named it "Judas Priest" after a 1967 song by American folk star Bob Dylan, "The Ballad of Frankie Lee and Judas Priest". However, the young band had to face tragedy very early on. Their original guitarist, Perry, committed suicide in the year of the band's formation. He was replaced by a 17-year-old multi-instrumentalist Ernest Chataway, who was formerly with "Earth" - the band which later became world-famous as "Black Sabbath".

By the time Judas Priest recorded their first demo tape in late 1969, only Atkins remained from the original line-up. They recorded two songs for that tape, which, along with a few early Judas Priest concert shows, was enough for them to score a 3-album contract with the label Immediate. However, that label went bankrupt before the first Judas Priest album could be made, let alone released. As a result, the band broke up in 1970. When Atkins joined a new band later that year, they decided to adopt his old defunct band's name for themselves. Thus, Judas Priest was reborn, with K.K. Downing on the lead guitar, Ian "Skull" Hill on the bass, John Ellis on the drums, and as the single constant, Atkins on the lead vocals. However, he too left in 1973, as he gave in to pressure from his wife to find a job that brings in more income. The new lead singer became Rob Halford.

In 1974, the band got to go on their first international Judas Priest concert tour in continental Europe. Soon after, they were signed by the label Gull. Their debut album came out at last in September 1974, titled "Rocka Rolla". However, it ended up becoming a commercial flop, so the band went back to struggling financially.

They didn't hit success until the release of their third album, "Sin After Sin", in April 1977. It peaked at the #23 spot on the OCC chart in their home country of the UK. However, the band has been going strong ever since, putting out 15 more studio albums - thus, they have 18 in total in their discography. The best selling one among them is "Screaming for Vengeance" from July 1982, which sold 2.1 million copies worldwide. Meanwhile, the latest new Judas Priest album came out in April 2018, with the title "Firepower".

The biggest hits in the Judas Priest setlist to date are "Diamonds and Rust" (1977), "Breaking the Law" (1980), "Turbo Lover" (1986), and "Painkiller" (1990, same title as their album). After many, many changes, the band's line-up is currently made up of lead singer Rob Halford, lead guitarist Glenn Tipton, rhythm guitarist Richie Faulker, bassist Ian Hill, and drummer Scott Travis. Despite their early struggles, Judas Priest became one of the most influential heavy metal bands in the 20th century.

no it’s not. I’m glad he is alive but awful to see him like that and ruins the show when he’s on stage. He’s was my idol for many years growing up.

It's a bit odd to think that it ruins the show to see him out there enjoying himself playing songs he co-wrote with his brothers. I mean, let's imagine replacing them all and still calling it Judas Priest now – that sounds like a hell of an idea.

I don’t enjoy watching the greatest metal headbanger of all time in that state. If you enjoy it, that’s your opinion.

I don't enjoy seeing him like that. Let's act like we have a little sense, even if you don't. It's great to see him out there enjoying himself, doing what he loves to do, instead of just wasting away each day as that horrible disease gradually does to people.

As always, Priest has the hook and riff. They always always bring it. Good old heavy metal.

      that’s right.

They could come to the US anytime soon; however, all of their recent tours are in the UK/Europe.
