Dua Lipa Biography

Dua Lipa is a British singer, songwriter, and model. She was born on August 22, 1995 in London, England, United Kingdom. Lipa was born to Kosovo-Albanian immigrants. Her father was a musician back in Yugoslavia, which influenced her greatly. She got interested in music at an elementary school age. She learnt the cello and auditioned for her school choir - however, she was rejected as the choir teacher told her that “she could not sing”.

Luckily, this didn’t deter her completely. She got after school voice lessons at a theater school. She spent a brief time back in Kosovo with her family as a teenager. When she returned to London, she got very serious about her career as a singer and model. The young Dua, still only 15, also started to upload song covers to sites like Soundcloud and YouTube. She even appeared in an ad for the new X-Factor series in 2013.

All this ultimately led to her signing a contract with Tap Management which gave her a monthly salary to quit her waitress job to write music. In 2014, she signed a new contract with an even bigger player in the entertainment industry, Warner Bros. Her first single was released in August 2015 with the title “New Love”. While it never became a major hit, it performed well enough for Lipa to remain in the music industry, and continue to put on Dua Lipa concert across the UK. Thus her first studio album, the self-titled “Dua Lipa”, was released in June 2017.

It sold over 700,000 copies in the US and an additional 90,000 copies in her home country of UK. It was what the industry calls “a sleeper hit”, meaning it became popular sometime after its release date. For this album, it was about a year after, in the spring of 2018. The most successful track on the album was “New Rules”.

Since then, she released one full new Dua Lipa album. It has the somewhat confusing title “Future Nostalgia”, and came out in March 2020. Lipa’s most successful hits to date are the aforementioned “New Rules” (2018), “IDGAF” (also 2018), and “Don’t Start Now” (2019). She was also featured on the 2017 hit Sean Paul track “No Lie”, and on the 2018 Calvin Harris song “One Kiss”. You can check where the nearest Dua Lipa concert is on the page above.
