Halsey Biography

Ashley Nicolette Frangipane, better known by her stage name Halsey, is an American singer and songwriter. She was born on September 29, 1994 in Edison, New Jersey. As a child, Halsey learnt to play a whole slew of string instruments, namely the violin, viola, and cello, before sticking with the guitar at age 14. Her early musical influences were Justin Bieber, Alanis Morissette, and the rock band Brand New. Sadly, she attempted suicide at age 17, partly due to bullying at her school. After the incident, she spent 3 weeks in the hospital and was ultimately diagnosed with bipolar disorder.

She then started taking drugs and started a relationship with a 24-year-old man (still at age 17), on who, by the way, her stage name is based. Halsey graduated high school, but then dropped out of university, then a community college too. Her parents eventually kicked her out due to the drug-enthusiast crowd she hung out with. She even had to stay in New York City homeless shelters at times.

During her late teens, Halsey also wrote music and posted it on social media sites like YouTube and Kik. In 2013, a parody song she made about Taylor Swift’s “Knew You Were Trouble” went viral. During her troubled times, an unidentified “music guy” offered to help her out and recorded her song “Ghost”. It gained a lot of traction on Soundcloud, and Halsey was signed by the record label Astralwerks soon after. Her toughest times were done, she started performing live shows regularly.

Her debut album came out in August 2015, with the title “Badlands”. It became a massive hit, peaking at the #2 spot on Billboard 200. She has released 3 more albums since, thus she has 4 in total. The best selling one remained her first, the electropop record “Badlands”, which sold 626,000 copies in the US alone. Meanwhile, her latest studio project came out in August 2021, with the title “If I Can't Have Love, I Want Power”.

Halsey’s biggest hits to date are “Colors” (2015), “Bad At Love” (2017), and “Without Me” (2018). She was also featured on the 2016 hit single by The Chainsmokers “Closer”.
