Lorde Biography

From performing at Auckland school talent competitions to being voted among the best voices in pop music, Lorde's is a tale that thwarts music industry myth. Signed with Universal Music Group at age 13, she took years refining her sound, working with producer Joel Little on The Love Club EP, which they initially released for free on SoundCloud in 2012.

That patience paid off when "Royals" went global in 2013 and made her the youngest artist to top the Billboard Hot 100 since 1987. The denunciation of pop culture decadence by the track, performed in her characteristic bass range, resonated with millions and went on to become diamond.

Her debut album "Pure Heroine" captured the suburban teenage life with unprecedented delicacy, and it sold over four million albums worldwide. Lorde honed her craft with co-producer Jack Antonoff on 2017's "Melodrama", a moody break-up record that appeared on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums.

She surprised them once more with 2021's "Solar Power", exploring psychedelic folk territory. Critics split on it, but proved she was consistent by not giving a damn about business.

It's what makes Lorde stand out, not her age - her writerly sensibility to songwriting, borrowing novelists such as Raymond Carver and Sylvia Plath. She has found a niche within pop, where intelligent lyrics meet avant-garde production, and won two Grammys and a spot on Time magazine's most influential teens list along the way.

From writing teen pop ballads about suburban teenagers to writing lush emotional landscapes, Lorde has grown from child prodigy to pioneering artist without watering down either her unique vision or artistic sensibilities.
