The Oktoberfest of Blumenau is a celebration of German traditions, that unfolds in mid-October in the state of Santa Catarina, Brazil. Regarded as the second-largest German festival in the Americas and the third-largest Oktoberfest globally, following Munich's original event. Hosted at Parque Vila Germânica in the Bairro da Velha, this festival spans 18 days, immersing attendees in a rich tapestry of cultural delights.
The festival's history is very interesting. Established in 84 following a significant flood of the Itajaí-Açu river, the Oktoberfest of Blumenau was conceived to revitalize the city's economy and uplift its residents' spirits. Preceding this, local industrial and commercial leaders had already envisioned a festival akin to Munich's renowned event. Even though the flood was a catastrophic event, it brought a sense of unity and encouraged the citizens to rebuild the city.
Since the event's first edition, the Oktoberfest of Blumenau has thrived, drawing around 700k attendees annually. The festival has a little bit of everything for everyone, make sure to go watch some of these activities, like folk dance, German singing, traditional attire, and many others! "Fritz" and "Frida" embody the typical German characters at the event, while "Vovó e Vovô Chopão" (Grandma and Grandpa Chopão, "Big Beer") serve as the official symbolic figures.
While drinking some good beer at the fest, you can enjoy music from artists and bands like Pedro Sampaio, Grupo Menos é Mais, Israel E Rodolffo, and many others! If you consider yourself as a pro-beer-drinker, you can join the National Competition of Chopp in Meter Drinkers. And for the ladies, the Queen of the Oktoberfest is a must-try!
