Avril Lavigne Biography

Avril Lavigne is a Canadian singer and songwriter. She was born on September 27, 1984 in Belleville, CanadaLavigne moved to rural Ontario with her family as a young child. Her parents discovered her signing talent early. They encouraged her to pursue music and even bought her instruments and studio equipment. As a teenager, Avril started performing at country fairs and writing her own songs.

In 1999, at age 15, she got to open for Canadian singer Shania Twain in front of 20,000 people after winning a talent search contest. There, she was approached by local folksinger Stephen Medd to provide vocals for his songs.

This all ultimately led to Lavigne being signed by the New York-based record label Arista Records in 2000. Her debut album, “Let Go”, came out in June 2002. It became a massive success, even peaking at the #2 spot on the famous Billboard 200 list in the United States. It sold 1 million copies in Lavigne’s home country of Canada alone, and 16 million in total. The most famous single on the tracklist was “Complicated”In May 2004, Lavigne's second studio album was released with the title “Under My Skin”. Alas, it could not replicate her debut’s success, but still sold an impressive 10 million copies worldwide.

Since then, Lavigne has published 5 more studio albums, thus she has 7 in total. The best selling one remained her first one. Meanwhile, her latest album, “Love Sux”, came out in February 2022. However, that only sold around 19,000 copies in the US.

The French-Canadian pop-rock star’s biggest hits to date are the aforementioned “Complicated” (2002), “My Happy Ending” (2004), “Girlfriend” (2007), and “When You’re Gone” (also 2007).

Her unusual first name means “April” in French. Her parents gave her this name despite her being born in September. Aside from her music career, Lavigne owns the clothing line Abbey Dawn. She founded it in 2008 and it’s still in business to this day.
