Formed on the streets of Oakland back in 1991, Machine Head would forge a sound that would help pioneer the new wave of American heavy metal. Frontman Robb Flynn, who to this day still leads the charge, brought together an aggressive musicianship that was fierce and different from day one. While the lineup has varied over the years, it's currently being held down by the powerful trio of Flynn on vocals and rhythm guitar, Jared MacEachern on bass, and Matt Alston on drums.
Their European fanbase ignited first, and across the pond, their first four albums created an intense following. Success in the States proved more elusive until later releases. They hit a snag with their fourth album, Supercharger, which dropped just three weeks after 9/11. In retrospect, the timing could not have been worse—their single "Crashing Around You" and its music video featuring burning buildings got yanked from the airwaves.
The controversy nearly tore the band apart in 2002, forcing them to negotiate their way off Roadrunner Records. But like true metal warriors, they bounced back, eventually returning to the label stronger than ever. Along the way, Machine Head has hardly been afraid to experiment. Though they cut their teeth on groove metal and nu metal early on, 2007's The Blackening saw a return to thrash metal roots with epic, sprawling songs that earned them critical acclaim.
Metal Hammer named it Album of the Decade in 2010, while "Aesthetics of Hate" garnered them their first Grammy nomination. They followed that up with 2011's Unto the Locust and 2014's Bloodstone & Diamonds before doing another creative left turn into nu metal with 2018's Catharsis. The latest album, 2022's Of Kingdom and Crown, finds them full circle, embracing groove and thrash in their first-ever concept album.
