Pantera Biography

Formed in Arlington, Texas, in 1981 by brothers Vinnie Paul (drums) and "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott (guitar) with vocalist Terry Glaze and bassist Tommy Bradford, the latter was replaced by Rex Brown in 1982. After three glam metal albums in the 1980s, Pantera replaced Glaze with Phil Anselmo in 1986 and went heavy for Power Metal in 1988. Their major label debut "Cowboys from Hell" (1990) pioneered the groove metal subgenre and launched them to stardom. The presence of "Vulgar Display of Power" (1992) and "Far Beyond Driven" (1994), which reached #1 on the Billboard 200, forever positioned Pantera as the iconic icons of metal music. They went on to sell about 20 million records worldwide.

Things started to get uneasy, however, in the mid-1990s when Anselmo was in so much pain in his back and line and was hooked on heroin. He concentrated more on such side projects as Down and Superjoint Ritual. While Pantera released "The Great Southern Trendkill", 1996 and "Reinventing the Steel", 2000, they went on hiatus in 2001 after intensifying conflicts arose. The band officially split in 2003.

Tragedy struck on December 8, 2004 when Nathan Gale shot and killed Dimebag Darrell on stage at a show by his new band Damageplan. Vinnie Paul died of heart failure on June 22, 2018 at age 54. In July 2022, it was announced that Anselmo and Brown would reunite Pantera for their first tour in more than 20 years. The reunited lineup also features Zakk Wylde on guitar and Charlie Benante on drums as fill-ins for the Abbott brothers. The new lineup made its live debut in December 2022 with a run of shows in Mexico, Chile, Brazil and Colombia. A European tour followed in May-June 2023.

Although there have been rumors of possible new music from the re-constituted Pantera, a handful of 2023 festival dates in Germany and Austria were scrapped after public outcry over Anselmo's past use of racial slurs and Nazi salutes. The reunion tour is set to spill into 2025, including their first UK and Ireland tour in more than two decades.

He's being heavily criticized for trying to take Dimebag's place recently.

You're tripping, bro. He even stated that it's been an honor playing for Pantera and that he feels Darrell's spirit supporting him. The man's definitely happy by supporting his best friend's band
