Formed in Los Angeles, USA, Thirty Seconds to Mars is a rock/space rock band formed by the rockstar and Hollywood actor, Jared Leto and his brother Shannon Leto. Although the band has changed members over time, the Leto brothers have always been part of it. Their first album, released in 2002, got good reviews but didn't sell much. But their second album, "A Beautiful Lie," released in 2005, made them famous worldwide.
The Leto brothers and the band tried different styles in albums like "This Is War" in 2009 and "Love, Lust, Faith and Dreams" in 2013. Their battles with their record label and the making of "This Is War" became a movie called "Artifact" in 2012. Even though their later albums like "America" in 2018 and "It's the End of the World but It's a Beautiful Day" in 2023 got mixed reviews, they've sold over 15 million albums worldwide.
In 1998, the band was performing in small venues across the U.S. and working on their debut album, with Jared Leto writing most of the songs. They recorded demo tracks like "Valhalla," "Revolution," and "Buddha for Mary." Their music caught the attention of record labels, leading to a deal with Immortal Records in 1999, later signed with Virgin Records.
In 2001, Thirty Seconds to Mars went to Wyoming to record their first album. They found a big empty building on a huge piece of land to record their music. Before their album was out, they were asked to tour with Puddle of Mudd. Later, they toured with Incubus and did their own shows.
Their first album, "30 Seconds to Mars," came out in 2002. Jared Leto said it's about the struggles people face. It did okay in the charts and sold a good number of copies. The song "Capricorn (A Brand New Name)" did well too. People mostly liked the album, saying it's different. They toured with other bands like I Mother Earth and Billy Talent. They were also on TV for the first time and released another song, "Edge of the Earth." They changed guitarists during this time too.
In 2012, the group stopped touring to work on their fourth album, "Love, Lust, Faith and Dreams." Jared Leto and Steve Lillywhite produced the album together. Leto said they tried something new with this album, calling it a fresh start creatively. He described it as exciting, unexpected, and very inspiring.
In 2021, Leto announced he'd feature in a song with the worldwide famous DJ and future bass producer Illenium called "Wouldn't Change a Thing." Then, in 2022, Thirty Seconds to Mars revealed plans for a 20th-anniversary edition of their debut album.
