Breaking Benjamin Biography

Breaking Benjamin is an American rock band. They were formed in 1999 in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. The founding members were lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist Benjamin Burnley (born in 1978 in Atlantic City, New Jersey), drummer Jeremy Hummel (1973, Pennsylvania), and bassist Jason Davoli (1981).

Burnley was originally in a different band named “Breaking Benjamin”, playing soft rock music. The name came from an incident when Burnley accidentally broke a borrowed microphone. However, that band was short-lived. Burnley returned to his home state of Pennsylvania in 1999, where he teamed up with Hummel and Davoli to form the new group originally called “Plan 9”. However, Burnley reclaimed the name “Breaking Benjamin” from his own defunct band soon after. One of their early tracks, “Polyamorous”, became a hit in local radio.

The radio DJ who originally discovered the band, Freddie Fabbri, invested his own money to produce the band’s debut EP. By that time, Davoli was replaced by Jonathan "Bug" Price on the bass. Guitarist Aaron Fink also joined the line-up from the old Breaking Benjamin band; along with second bassist Mark Klepaski. In 2002, the band signed its first record deal with Hollywood Records.

Their debut album came out in August 2002, with the title “Saturate”. It became a moderate hit, peaking at the #2 spot on Billboard’s new artist-specific Heatseekers chart, while getting to the #136 spot on the overall Billboard 200 chart. The band went on to release 3 more albums between 2004 and 2009.

However, in 2010, an internal conflict erupted among the members. Burnley accused two of his bandmates of giving their label permission to produce a remix of one of their hit songs without his approval. This first led to a hiatus in 2010, then a full official break-up of the band in 2013.

In 2014, Breaking Benjamin announced their return through their Facebook page: with Burnley back as a lead singer and 4 new musicians. They are: lead guitarist Jasen Rauch, rhythm guitarist Keith Wallen, bassist Aaron Bruch, and drummer Shaun Foist. They make up the line-up of the band to this day. They marked their resurrection with a series of live Breaking Benjamin concert shows across America.

Overall, Breaking Benjamin has released 6 studio albums in total. The best selling one among them is “Phobia” from August 2008, which sold over 1 million copies in the US alone. Meanwhile, the latest new Breaking Benjamin album came out in April 2018, with the title “Ember”. The biggest Breaking Benjamin hits to date are “So Cold” (2004), “The Diary of Jane” (2006), “I Will Not Bow” (2009), and “Angels Fall” (2015).
