In 1999, in a Vancouver suburb, Dean Back and Tyler Connolly had an epiphany, something like: hey, we should start a rock band. But here's where things take a turn for the interesting - Tyler manages to get their demo tape into the hands of Chad Kroeger's ex-girlfriend (yep, that Nickelback guy). She forwards it along, and the next thing you know, Tyler's being invited over to Chad's house for a barbecue. Who you know is everything!
They were the first band signed to Kroeger's record label, 604 Records, and put out their first album in 2002. Fun fact: they got their band name from one of their early songs about a guy who's going to kill himself (heavy material for a band to give themselves this type of name.). These guys are more than just your typical one-hit rock band. Alright, they started out with that post-grunge sound (al la Nickelback), but they've incorporated everything from country undertones to acoustic ballads. They've had four #1 rock chart hits with songs like "Bad Girlfriend" and "Rx (Medicate)."
Here's a good wrestling connection: they've done WWE TV theme songs and even covered Vince McMahon's legendary "No Chance in Hell" entrance theme. They've played the Grey Cup halftime show to Mötley Crüe tours.
They had their Prince moment in 2017 when they shortened their name to just "Theory" - because, let's be real, "Theory of a Deadman" is a bit of a mouthful! They've also kept expanding their sound. Their 2020 album "Say Nothing" touched on some tough subjects like domestic violence and political polarization and proved they aren't afraid to keep it real with their lyrics.
Most recently, they got back to their hard rock beginnings with "Dinosaur" in 2023. After more than 20 years together, these Canadian rockers are still managing to find new ways of making their music new while staying true to what began it all.
