Shawn Peter Raul Mendes is a Canadian singer and songwriter. He was born on August 8, 1998 in Pickering, Canada. Mendes grew up in a rather wealthy family in Ontario. In high school, he played soccer and ice hockey, but also joined the glee club where he could hone his vocal abilities. Also, he took acting classes and learnt to play the guitar.

In 2013, at age 15, he started uploading videos of himself performing cover songs on YouTube and the late social media app Vine. His rendition of the Justin Bieber song "As Long as You Love Me" went viral on Vine within the same year. He ended up gaining millions of followers on the platform.

Evidently, it was only a matter of time before he was discovered by someone from the music industry. He was eventually signed by Island Records in 2014. He became the youngest artist ever to have a debut single enter in the top 25 of the the Billboard Hot 100 chart - his song peaked at #24. Shawn Mendes’ debut album, a pop rock record, came out in April 2015, with the title “Handwritten”. It ended up topping the Billboard 200 list. He also got to headline in his very first Shawn Mendes concert tour, which took place between November 2014 and September 2015.

Since then, Mendes has released 3 more studio albums, thus he has 4 in total. The best selling one so far has been his second one, “Illuminate” from September 2016, which sold 600,000 copies worldwide. Meanwhile, the latest new Shawn Mendes album is titled “Wonder”, which came out in December 2020.

Mendes dated Cuban-American pop superstar Camila Cabello between 2019 and 2021. In 2019, they released the song “Señorita” together, which became the biggest hit of the year. Apart from that, Mendes’ biggest hits to date are “Stitches” (2015), “Treat You Better” (2016), “Mercy” (also 2016), and “There's Nothing Holdin' Me Back” (2017).
