Formed in 1965 in Hanover, Germany, Scorpions is a legendary hard rock band responsible for shaping the rock community. Formed by Rudolf Schenker, the band's guitarist, Scorpions has sold over 100 million records worldwide, making them one of the top-selling heavy metal bands, alongside KISS, Iron Maiden, and other genre legends.
Scorpion's 78-92 lineup included Klaus Meine (singer), Rudolf Schenker (rhythm guitar), Matthias Jabs (lead guitar), Francis Buchholz (bass), and Herman Rarebell (drums). Rudolf Schenker is the only original member left. Meine sang on all their albums, Jabs joined in 78, and bassist Paweł Mąciwoda and drummer Mikkey Dee came on board in 2003 and 2016.
In 1970, things started shaping up when Michael Schenker's younger brother and vocalist Klaus Meine, who had previously played together in a Led Zeppelin and Taste cover band called Copernicus, joined the band. In 1974, Scorpions dropped "Fly to the Rainbow." It was a bigger hit than their previous album, "Lonesome Crow," with tracks like "Speedy's Coming" and the title song setting their signature sound.
In 1980, the band put out "Animal Magnetism," featuring something in the cover that caught the public's (mainly men) attention: a girl kneeling beside a Doberman Pinscher in front of a man. The album included hits like "The Zoo" and "Make It Real."
In 1990, they released "Crazy World," showcasing a rawer sound. The album soared in popularity, mainly due to the huge success of the song "Wind of Change." Scorpions' songs always brought change to the whole scenario, "Wind of Change" is famous mainly because it was released during the political shifts in Eastern Europe and the fall of the Berlin Wall. Not to mention the song is one of the best-selling singles ever, with over 14 million copies sold.
Not only "Wind of Change" brought success to Scorpions, "Love at First Sting," also stands out as a hugely influential and beloved work. "Rock You Like a Hurricane" is also considered a classic in heavy metal and rock ballads. Both songs are often described as rock anthems.
Till today, Scorpions are touring like crazy everywhere in the world. In 2023, after eight years, the band made their first return to Turkey.
