Major Lazer is an American electronic dance music group. They were formed in 2008 in Kingston, Jamaica. The founding members were Thomas Wesley “Diplo” Pentz (born in 1978 in Tupelo, Mississippi), and David James Andrew “Switch” Taylor (born in 1969 in the United Kingdom).
The two founding DJ’s, Diplo and Switch, met each other while working on an album by British rapper-singer M.I.A. Diplo was discovered by M.I.A. while DJ’ing in a night club in London in 2004. They have been collabing since. Switch joined M.I.A.’s team in 2005. The three of them put together the 2008 alt hip hop hit “Paper Planes” by M.I.A.
Diplo and Switch decided to form the EDM group "Major Lazer" in 2008. They recorded their first album that year in a studio in Kingston, Jamaica. That album is titled “Guns Don't Kill People... Lazers Do”, and came out in June 2009 through the major American label Downtown Records. It featured quite a few major artists on the vocals of the tracks, such as Santigold, Vybz Kartel, and their old music partner, M.I.A. The record became a moderate hit, peaking at the #7 spot on Billboard’s Electronic Albums list, while also breaking into the not genre-specific famous Billboard 200 list at the #169 spot.
In late 2011, co-founder Switch left the group citing “creative differences” with Diplo as the reason. Two music producer-DJ’s were brought in in his place, the Trinidadian Christopher “Jillionaire” Leacock and the Jamaican Leighton Paul “Walshy Fire” Walsh. Thus, the audience got to see an EDM trio grew instead of an EDM duo at the next Major Lazer concert.
Major Lazer has produced a total of 4 studio albums so far. The best selling one among them is “Peace Is the Mission”, which came out in June 2015 and sold over 700,000 copies worldwide. Meanwhile, their latest new Major Lazer album was released in October 2020, with the title “Music Is the Weapon”.
The EDM group’s biggest hits to date are “Light It Up” (2015) featuring Nyla and Fuse ODG, “Lean On” (also 2015) featuring DJ Snake and MØ, and “Cold Water” (2016) featuring Justin Bieber and MØ again. In their current line-up, Jillionaire has been replaced by Mexican-American DJ Eric “Ape Drums” Alberto-Lopez. Check where the next Major Lazer concert is taking place on the page above.
