Calvin Harris Biography

Adam Richard Wiles, better known by his stage name Calvin Harris, is a British DJ, music producer, songwriter, and singer. He was born on January 17, 1984 in Dumfries, ScotlandHarris grew up in an upper-middle class family in Scotland. Still, he stocked shelves in supermarkets and worked in fish processing plants to buy the first DJ gear of his own. In high school, he recorded demo songs. At age 18, he released two singles under the name “Stouffer”. He also moved to London to try to make it in the music industry. However, after minimal success, he was forced to return to his hometown in Scotland

But Harris didn’t give up just yet. He kept making music and uploading it to the late social media site MySpace. There, he amassed a sizable following and attracted the attention of a talent booker for the dance-festival firm Global Gathering. He signed him as his first client in a new talent management firm.

With his new management, Harris got to release his debut album in June 2007 with the title “I Created Disco”, through Columbia Records. He later explained that he chose the pseudonym “Calvin Harris” because it sounded “racially ambiguous”, as his first single was a soul track, a genre mostly affiliated with Afro-American culture. "I Created Disco" became a massive hit in the UK, peaking at the #8 spot on the OCC chart. However, it never made it to the Billboard 200 list over in the US, only reaching the #19 place on the genre-specific Top Dance/Electronic Albums list.

His second album “Ready for the Weekend” came out in August 2009. Harris’ first album that made it to the Billboard 200 list in the United States was his third one, “18 Months”, released in October 2012. It peaked at #19 spot on the famous list, and became an international hit.

Since then, Harris has put out 3 additional albums, thus he has 6 in total. The best selling one has been 2012’s “18 Months”. Meanwhile, his latest record is titled “Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 2”, which was released in August 2022. The Scottish DJ’s biggest hits to date are "Summer" (2014), "How Deep Is Your Love" feat. The Disciples (2015), and "This is What You Came For" feat. Rihanna (2016).

Harris briefly dated American pop superstar Taylor Swift between 2015 and 2016. In 2012, he surpassed Michael Jackson’s record of most songs from the same album being placed in the top 10 singles chart in the UK. 8 tracks off of his megahit “18 Months” reached the top 10.
