Sean Paul Ryan Francis Henriques, better known by his stage name Sean Paul, is a Jamaican rapper, singer, and songwriter. He was born on January 9, 1973 in Kingston, Jamaica. Paul was born into an artistic family in Jamaica, as his mother was a painter. However, he could not have much contact with his father growing up, as he spent 9 years in prison after being convicted on a manslaughter charge. Initially, Paul was aspiring to become an athlete - he even played for his country’s national water polo teams between ages 13 and 21 (his grandfather was also a pro water polo player). However, he gave up polo to pursue a career in music.
Paul started off his career in music by performing at open mic nights in Kingston in his late teens. At one of those events, he caught the attention of the brother of music producer Jeremy Harding. Paul and Harding eventually met and started recording some tracks in Harding’s studio. The first song that they ended up releasing was “Infiltrate” in 1996. Two years later, he appeared briefly in the American crime movie “Belly” as a dancehall performer. He was also featured on one of the songs in the movie’s soundtrack, “Top Shotter”, along with American rapper DMX and fellow Jamaican dancehall musician Mr. Vegas.
Sean Paul’s debut album came out in March 2000, with the title “Stage One” and through the label VP Records. It charted at #2 two on Billboard’s Top Reggae Albums list in the US. His first international hit single came two years later, in 2002 - “Gimme the Light” peaked at #7 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart.
The biggest hits in the Sean Paul setlist to date are “Get Busy” (2002), “She Doesn’t Mind” (2012), “Got 2 Luv U” (also 2012) featuring Alexis Jordan, and “No Lie” (2017). He was also featured on the 2018 hit single “Rockaby” by the English EDM group Clean Bandit, along with singer Anne-Marie.
