Justin Timberlake is an American singer, songwriter, and actor. He was born on January 31, 1981 in Memphis, Tennessee. He grew up in the American South with a gospel choir director as a father. As a result, he too started singing gospels as a child, as well as his grandfather’s favorite genre, country. At age 11, he appeared on the syndicated talent show "Star Search", performing under the name “Justin Randall”. He also appeared on the Disney variety show "The Mickey Mouse Club", along with such future pop stars as Christina Aguilera and Britney Spears (the latter of whom he also dated for a while later).
In 1995, while Timberlake was still only 14, he joined the pop boy band NSYNC. The band also included fellow Disney actor JC Chasez, as well as Joey Fatone, Chris Kirkpatrick, and Lance Bass. In 1998, they released their self-titled debut album “‘N Sync” which became a massive success. It peaked at the #2 spot on the Billboard 200 chart in the US, and ended up selling 11 million copies worldwide. The band’s star kept rising in the early 2000’s: they released two more megahit albums and headlined at a Justin Timberlake concert during the halftime show, along with Aerosmith, at the 2001 Super Bowl between the Baltimore Ravens and the New York Giants.
At another Justin Timberlake concert during another Super Bowl halftime show, Timberlake happened to be in the center of one of the biggest scandals in American broadcast history. At the 2004 NFL final show, he accidentally exposed one of the breasts of his fellow performer Janet Jackson in front of a TV audience of 140 million people. The fallout was cosmic after the event, with many new broadcasting regulations being put in place as a direct result.
Later in 2004, Timberlake decided he wanted to leave his boys at NSYNC behind to embark on a solo career. He started getting prominent movie roles as well.
He put out his debut solo album, “Justified” in 2002, while still being part of NSYNC. In September 2006, he released his second studio album as a solo artist, “FutureSex/LoveSounds”, which became a massive hit. It topped the Billboard 200 list upon its release; and contained such hits as “Sexy Back” and “What Goes Around… Comes Around”.
Timberlake went on to make 3 more albums, but his best selling one remained “FutureSex/LoveSounds” with 10 million copies sold worldwide. The latest new Justin Timberlake album is “Man of the Woods” from February 2018.
Justin Timberlake’s biggest hits to date are the aforementioned “Sexy Back” (2006), “Mirrors” (2013), “Can’t Stop the Feeling!” (2016), and “Say Something” (2018). As an actor, he played in such blockbuster movies as “The Social Network” (2010), “In Time” (2011), “Friends with Benefits” (also 2011), and also lent his voice to a character in the animated film “Trolls” (2016).
