Drake Biography

Aubrey Drake Graham, better known by his stage mononym Drake, is a Canadian rapper, singer, songwriter, and actor. He was born on October 24, 1986 in Toronto, Canada. Drake’s father is a professional drummer from Tennessee, US, while his mother is a Canadian Jewish English teacher and florist. They divorced when Drake was just 5, he stayed with his mother in Canada. His first passion in arts was acting, not music. He spent a lot of time in after school acting classes. At age 15, he got cast on the Canadian teen drama Degrassi: The Next Generation which aired on a number of channels in Canada, including MTV. The series ran for an impressive 14 seasons between 2001 and 2015, with a total of 385 episodes made.

Drake played the character of Jimmy Brooks, a basketball star from a wealthy family, who gets paralyzed after getting shot by his classmate. While he was never overly passionate about this project, Drake used the attention he got from appearing on the show to push his newfound love and career goal, his music.

He self-produced a mixtape titled “Room for Improvement” in 2006. It only sold around 6,000 copies, but that didn’t deter Drake. He released two mixtapes. Using his show business connections, he was able to feature such artists on these tapes as Lil Wayne or Trey Songz. The third one, “ So Far Gone” got him the mainstream success he was after.

Music labels went into a bidding war to sing the rising star. He eventually partnered with Young Money Entertainment, a company founded by Lil Wayne.

Thus Drake’s debut album came out in June 2010, with the title “Thank Me Later”. It became a massive success, reaching the top of the famous Billboard 200 list. He also got to go on his first North American Drake concert tour in 2010, called "Away From Home Tour". Since then he released 6 more studio albums. The latest new Drake album is “Honestly, Nevermind’ from June 2022. Meanwhile, his best selling record so far is “Views” from April 2016, which sold over 7 million copies worldwide.

In his work, Drake masterfully blends the genres of hip hop, pop rap, and R&B. The Canadian music star’s biggest hits to date are “Started from the Bottom” (2013), “Hotline Bling” (2015), and ”God’s Plan” (2018). He was also featured on the 2020 hit single by rapper Future “Life is Good”.

In June 2018, Drake was certified as the artist with the most digital sales. He sold a whopping 142 million copies of his singles over the internet. Check when the next Drake concert is playing near you on our page above.
