ZZ Top Biography
For a whopping 51 years, from their start in Houston way back in '69 to Dusty Hill's passing in 2021, this power trio kept the same lineup - Billy Gibbons, Dusty Hill, and Frank Beard (ironically the only one without a beard), also known as the rock band, ZZ Top. They cooked up their own special sauce blending blues-rock with tongue-in-cheek lyrics, and man, did they look the part with Billy and Dusty rocking those iconic chest-length beards, shades, and hats. During the band's extremely successful career, they sold about 50 million records and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004. After Hill's death, he was replaced by their longtime guitar tech Elwood Francis, as Hill had requested.
After some early hits in the '70s like the gritty "La Grange", these Texas boys hit the big time in the '80s. Albums like "Eliminator" and those slick MTV videos turned 'em into certified rockstars. Who can forget those hot rods and leggy ladies in the "Legs" video? Dusty's passing was a tough blow, but he wanted the show to go on with their trusty guitar tech Elwood Francis stepping in on bass duties. Billy Gibbons had the bright idea to smoosh together B.B. King and Z.Z. Hill's monikers after noticing lots of cats used initials.
The OG lineup formed in Houston with Gibbons, Lanier Greig, and Dan Mitchell, but before long, Dusty and Frank (from a band called American Blues) stepped in and the rest, as they say, is history.
The boys paid their dues. After inking a deal with London Records in the early 70s, they played their first gig at a humble Knights of Columbus Hall in Beaumont, TX. Can you imagine seeing these legends in such a small venue? Their first couple albums showed off their blues roots before "Tres Hombres" in '73 served up their breakout hit "La Grange" and put 'em on the map. But it was the '80s when they really blew up. Inspired by British new wavers, they started messing around with synthesizers, slick production, and MTV-ready videos. "Eliminator" in '83 was a monster, sellin' over 10 million copies! Suddenly, these scruffy, bearded bluesmen were rubbing elbows with the likes of Duran Duran on the charts. Go figure!
While they never quite matched that '80s peak commercially, Gibbons, Hill, and Beard kept on rockin' for decades, getting back to their stripped-down, gritty blues-rock sound in the '90s and beyond. After a Vegas residency and countless tours, it looked like they'd just keep goin' forever. But fate had other plans when Dusty passed in 2021.
In true rock n' roll fashion though, ZZ Top is carrying on, 'cause as Dusty said - the show must go on. With Elwood on bass, they're still bringin' their Texas-sized boogie to the people, and that's what it's all about, right? raises a Lone Star beer Here's to 50+ years of ZZ Top, the lil' ol' band from Texas that became unlikely MTV darlings and certified rock gods.
