Formed in Jacksonville, USA, Lynyrd Skynyrd is a legendary rock band known for their unique style of Southern rock genre. Founded in 64 and originally known as My Backyard, the band switched their name to Lynyrd Skynyrd in 68 and started to get popularity by the early 70s with worldwide known hits like "Sweet Home Alabama". Unfortunately, the band's career was tragically interrupted in 1977 by a plane crash that killed key members, including lead vocalist Ronnie Van Zant. The band reformed in 87 and brought new members like Johnny Van Zant, Ronnie's brother, as the lead vocalist. Despite this tragic event, Lynyrd Skynyrd will forever live on.
In 63, Allen Collins got his first guitar and joined The Mods, around that same time, Ronnie Van Zant joined The Squires, while Van Zant, Gary Rossington, and Bob Burns formed a band after a baseball game, which later they added Larry Junstrom and Allen Collins. The group went through many names and settled with The One Percent in 67, but quickly changed to Leonard Skinnerd one year later, which later became Lynyrd Skynyrd.
In the early 70s, Lynyrd Skynyrd signed to a big label after being discovered and started to work on their debut album, "Pronounced 'Lĕh-'nérd 'Skin-'nérd", which included the hit "Free Bird". After opening for The Who, Lynyrd Skynyrd's fan base grew a lot, which led to their second album, "Second Helping". After a few internal issues and line-up changes, by 77 the band was set for a major tour, highlighted by "Free Bird".
The tragic event, the airplane crash, happened in 77 after a show, killing Ronnie Van Zant, Steve Gaines, Cassie Gaines, and others, while injuring the rest of the band. This happened just after Lynyrd Skynyrd released their album "Street Survivors". The band disbanded, reuniting briefly in 1979 for a performance. The band's reunion in the early 90s, initially a tribute, continued despite legal challenges from the widows of Ronnie Van Zant and Steve Gaines. The band released several albums, including "Lynyrd Skynyrd 1991" and "The Last Rebel". Original drummer Bob Burns died in 2015, and former member Ed King passed away in 2018.
By 2018, the rock band went on a Farewell Tour, and by 2019 they played at the Kaaboo Texas festival. Another tragic event is that the band was affected by the 2008 Universal fire, which may have destroyed some of their master recordings. Gary Rossington, the last founding member, passed away in 2023, but the band decided to continue.
