One of the best-selling bands globally, with an impressive amount of over 80 million records sold, Foreigner, a rock band from the UK, was formed in 76 and debuted in 77, releasing major hits like "Feels Like the First Time." The rock band went through many lineup changes and had to deal with less successful albums throughout their career, but despite the struggles, the band is still considered to be one of the most respected and influential rock bands and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in October 2024.
The band was founded by Mick Jones, who initially collaborated with keyboardist Al Greenwood and others, but the lineup evolved until he found the right chemistry with Ian McDonald, Dennis Elliott, and Lou Gramm, among others. The band's first name wasn't Foreigner, it was called "Trigger," but they decided to change the band's name due to the mix of British and American members. Foreigner's debut album reached a huge commercial success and sold over five million copies in the United States. The album included hits like "Cold as Ice," and made the band a major force in the rock genre.
With a very successful debut, Foreigner was selling out arenas and taking part in many projects in 77, only one year after their official debut. By 78, the band was playing for over 200k people and touring all over the world. Their second album quickly came out, named "Double Vision," also reaching peak success. "Double Vision" sold over 7 million copies and it was followed by "Head Games," released in 79. By the early 80s, Greenwood and McDonald left, and the band became a quartet, which led them to release the album "4" in 81, which included songs like "Urgent" and "Waiting for a Girl Like You."
During the riots that took place in LA, Mick Jones and Lou Gramm ended up stuck at their hotel, which led them to get their partnership and friendship back on foot again. Gramm then decided to rejoin Foreigner, bringing with him, the bassist Bruce Turgon. In 99, the band toured with Journey, and in 2002 they celebrated their 25th anniversary with remastered albums and a tour. Gramm unfortunately left the band one year later due to some issues with Mick Jones, once again.
At that time, Mick Jones was the last original member of the band, then he decided to take a break before forming a new lineup in 2004. In 2005, Kelly Hansen, Foreigner's new frontman, joined the band and they toured with Def Leppard and Styx in 2007, and at a Led Zeppelin reunion show. In 2016, with over 40 years since the band was formed, they celebrated their 40th anniversary with a limited-edition vinyl EP, "The Flame Still Burns," featuring some live unplugged tracks. In 2024, Foreigner and Styx announced the "Renegades & Juke Box Heroes Tour" with John Waite.
Since 2013, there have been occasional concerts, projects, and guest appearances from combinations of former Foreigner members Gramm, Elliot, Wills, Greenwood, and (before his death) McDonald.
