Founded in Finland, Sonata Arctica is one of the most respected hard rock bands in Europe. The band transitioned from power metal, changing their name from Tricky Beans to Sonata Arctica. The band was founded by drummer Tommy Portimo and guitarists Jani Liimatainen and Marko Paasikoski, and Tony Kakko, the band's vocalist, came in 95, and bassist Pentti Peura in 96. The band was inspired by the thrash metal legendary band Megadeth, and their first name, was inspired by an early song about a mysterious lady.
In 97, the metal band, still known as Tricky Beans, decided to officially change their name to Sonata Arctica, refining their style, focusing on keyboard melodies and a distinct rhythm line. Shortly after Pentti Peura and Marko Paasikoski left the band, the band secured a three-album deal with a major record label, prompting a final name change to Sonata Arctica. That same year, they recorded the demo "FullMoon."
In 99, the band released their first single, "UnOpened," which was followed by their debut album as Sonata Arctica, named "Ecliptica," Tony Kakko shifted his focus solely to vocals, leading to the addition of Mikko Härkin as the keyboard player. One year later, in 2000, the band joined Stratovarius on a tour in Europe. The band quickly started to work on their second album, "Silence."
In 2004, with worldwide recognition, Sonata Arctica opened for Iron Maiden in Japan and released "Reckoning Night," which topped the Finnish charts. By 2007, the band headlined ProgPower USA and supported Nightwish on their 2008 North American tour. They also toured with DragonForce one year later.
By 2013, returned to their power metal roots, and released their tribute album, "A Tribute to Sonata Arctica," which came out in 2015. The band's studio album "Clear Cold Beyond," came out in 2024.
