DragonForce originally burst on the metal scene in 1999 when guitarists Herman Li and Sam Totman formed what would become the greatest power metal band. Originally they were active as DragonHeart, eventually rebranding back to DragonForce to build upon what they have now active in the form of lightning-speed combined power metal with video game-infused melodies and fantasies as scenarios.
Their first two albums, Valley of the Damned (2003) and Sonic Firestorm (2004), had them on the underground power metal circuit, but their third album changed everything. Inhuman Rampage (2005) and its title track Through the Fire and Flames launched them to mainstream fame, particularly after the latter was included in Guitar Hero III. It became alternatively better known later on by its phenomenally difficult guitar solos, and backing the album into gold status in the UK and US.
The band maintained momentum with 2008's Ultra Beatdown, for which they were a Grammy-nominated band in their song Heroes of Our Time. The band was not crestfallen and suffered a setback in 2010 when ZP Theart, their longtime lead singer in their first line-up, left the group. The band regenerated themselves in 2011 with new lead singer Marc Hudson to show the group could adjust but still retain the same distinctive style.
Throughout lineup overhauls over the years, only Li and Totman remained the consistent creative spark, developing the band's trademark sound they called "extreme power metal." Such a genre-specific approach - with a whiplash of guitar techniques, soaring vocals, and fantasy-themed subject matter lyrics - aided them in becoming one of the "big four" power metal groups alongside Helloween, Blind Guardian, and Sabaton.
The influence of DragonForce extends far beyond the ordinary metalheads. Their blend of computer game sound and image enabled them to appeal to a broader body of fans, and technical aptitude earned them the respect of musicians in all genres. Presently, as of 2024, they're innovating once more on their ninth record Warp Speed Warriors and collaborative works with gaming colossuses, proving that they can evolve today's trends while holding onto their virtuosic, high-intensity origins. Their track record attests to the fact that power metal is not only musically good and lucrative but also technically breathtaking.
