Sir Roderick David Stewart is a British singer and songwriter. He was born on January 10, 1945 in London, United Kingdom. Stewart was born into a middle class family in London during World War 2. He was struggling in school academically, but he was a talented athlete, captaining his school’s soccer team and playing center back. His earliest musical influence was his family often listening to jazz singer Al Jolson, a singer Stewart became a great fan of himself. Later, he discovered rock & roll and folk music. His sister got him a guitar as a gift when he was a teenager. He learnt to play it, then joined a folk band with his high school friends called “Kool Kats”.
Stewart dropped out of school at age 15. He tried out for the soccer Brentford FC (in the third division back then), but got rejected. So, he had to work odd manual jobs. Then, at age 17, he teamed up with folk singer Wizz Jones. They traveled around first the UK, then Europe, playing music on the streets for change. Returning back to London, Stewart joined the R&B band “The Dimensions” as a harmonica player and vocalist. After he had his vocalist part taken away from him, he left the band to join a new group, the blues band “Long John Baldry and the All Stars”, where he could both sing and play the harmonica again. In the meantime, he recorded solo demo tapes. This resulted in him signing a solo contract with Decca Records in 1964, the label that famously rejected The Beatles just two years earlier.
Stewart started doing live Rod Stewart concert shows across the UK, while also appearing on TV shows and recording music. However, his debut album, “An Old Raincoat Won't Ever Let You Down” didn’t come out until November 1969. It was reviewed positively and peaked at the #139 spot on the Billboard 200 in the US. The same year, Stewart joined the rock band “Faces” as the lead vocalist, while also keeping his solo career on the side. He stayed with Faces until 1975, then sporadically reunited them over the next decades.
As a solo artist, Stewart has put a whopping 29 full studio albums. The best selling one among them is “Blondes Have More Fun” from November 1978, which sold over 10 million copies worldwide. Meanwhile, the latest new Rod Stewart album came out in November 2021, with the title “The Tears of Hercules”.
The biggest hits in the Rod Stewart setlist to date are “Sailing” (1975), “Do You Think I’m Sexy?” (1978), “Baby Jane” (1983), and “Have You Ever Seen the Rain” (2006). On New Years' Eve 1994, he performed a free Rod Stewart concert at the Copacabana in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil for 3.5 million people in the audience, the highest attendance for a music concert ever, as certified by The Guinness Book of World Records.
