Onika Tanya Maraj-Petty, better known by her stage name Nicki Minaj, is a Trinidadian rapper, singer, and songwriter. She was born on December 8, 1982 in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago. Both of Minaj’s parents were part-time gospel singers back in Trinidad. However, her father was also an alcoholic and drug addict, which meant that Minaj was largely raised by her maternal grandmother. At age 5, she, along with her brother and her mother, immigrated to the US. They settled in New York City, New York. Minaj also got acepted to the Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts. After graduation, she pursued a career as an actress.
She got cast in an off-Broadway musical at age 19. She also became a member of the hip hop and R&B music group Full Force. There, she was featured as one of the vocalists on the song “Don't Mess With”, which was used as the entrance song for WWE star Victoria. However, Minaj left Full Force after a short stint, and started to upload original music to her MySpace profile instead. In 2007, she got signed as a solo artist to Dirty Money Entertainment. That is when she started to use her famous stage name “Nicki Minaj”.
Her first single that got traction was “I Get Crazy” from April 2009. This led to her being picked up by Lil Wayne’s label, Young Money Entertainment. In 2010, she was featured on rap superstar Kanye West’s single “Monster”, along with such hip hop stars as Jay-Z and Rick Ross.
Minaj’s debut album came out in November 2010, with the title “Pink Friday”. It became a massive hit, topping the famous Billboard 200 list upon its release. Since then, the Caribbean rap queen has released 3 more studio albums, thus she has 4 in total. The best selling one among them so far has remained her debut record with around 2 million copies sold in the US alone. Meanwhile, the latest new Nicki Minaj album is titled “Queen”, and came out in August 2018.
The biggest hits in the Nicki Minaj setlist to date are “Super Bass” (2010), “Anaconda” (2014), and “Only” (also 2014), featuring Drake, Lil Wayne, and Chris Brown. She was also featured on the 2016 hit single by Ariana Grande“Side to Side”; as well as on the 2015 track by David Guetta“Hey Mama”.
