Formed in Dorchester, USA, New Kids on the Block, often abbreviated as NKOTB, is a pop-rock band composed of siblings Jonathan and Jordan Knight, Joey McIntyre, Donnie Wahlberg, and Danny Wood. NKOTB rose to fame in the 80s, more precisely from the late 80s to the early 90s. The band sold an impressive amount of over 80 million records worldwide. The band is often acknowledged as a group that paved the way for boy bands such as Take That, Backstreet Boys, and NSYNC, which came up later.
In the early 80s, Maurice Starr, who discovered New Edition, wanted to create a similar group but with white members. He found Donnie Wahlberg, a talented rapper, and recruited him first. Then, Donnie brought in his brother Mark and some friends: Jamie Kelly, Jordan Knight, and Danny Wood. Later, they added Joey McIntyre.
At first, Joey struggled to fit in and was not able to find his own place in the band. After lots of practice and feeling pressure from the other band members, they got a record deal with a record label. But one problem came up, the record label wanted the group to have another name, back in the time, the group's name was Nynuk. So, they became "New Kids on the Block," inspired by one of Donnie's rap songs.
After their first album didn't do well, their record label almost dropped them. But a Florida radio station started playing the song "Please Don't Go Girl," and people loved it. The label made a new music video and promoted the song more, and it became a hit, reaching No. 10 on the charts.
After a lot of struggles, singles that didn't make it to the charts, internal problems, members quitting, and failed concerts, the group decided to split. Eventually, the TV channel MTV tried to reunite the group for a performance, but it didn't happen because Jonathan didn't join in.
In 2018, Donnie Wahlberg confirmed that the band was finally reunited, and was in the conversations to start making new music. After a while, the band eventually reunited and indeed, launched some new music. The song "Summertime", was released. The boys then dropped their second single, "Single", with R&B singer Ne-Yo, before releasing their first studio album in fourteen years, "The Block", which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Top Pop Albums Chart. They kicked off their reunion tour, "New Kids on the Block: Live", in Toronto, touring the U.S. with Natasha Bedingfield and Lady Gaga.
From then on, it was pure success. In 2015, they announced The Main Event tour with TLC and Nelly, as well as their reality TV series Rock This Boat: New Kids on the Block.
In 2024, they announced their eighth album, "Still Kids", set for release in 2024. They'll kick off the NKOTB Magic Summer 2024 Tour in June, with Paula Abdul and DJ Jazzy Jeff as opening acts.
