Founded in Philadelphia and known for being one of the most influential vocal harmony groups of all time, Boyz II Men, formed in the mid-80s, rose to success in 91, with the single "Motownphilly." The group proceeded to set some amazing records on the Billboard charts, like the Billboard Hot 100 with the song "One Sweet Day," not only this, Boyz II Men was also recognized as Billboard's biggest boy band from 87 to 2012. Despite some changes in their formation, Boyz II Men is still a global success. During their career, they've won 4 Grammy Awards.
The vocal harmony group started with the name of Unique Attraction and it was founded and envisioned by Michael Grimaldi, Nathan Morris, and Marc Nelson when they were in high school in Philadelphia. Something very interesting is that Unique Attraction was a project for their performing arts class. Wanyá Morris later joined the group two years after its foundation. Later, Shawn Stockman and Michael McCary were added. Then, they decided to change the group name to Boyz II Men (boys to men), inspired by New Edition.
The boys inspired a member of New Edition, Michael Bivins, during a concert, Bivins agreed to manage the group. At that time, Marc Nelson decided to leave the group due to conflicts, leaving the group with the quartet Michael McCary, Nathan Morris, Wanyá Morris, and Shawn Stockman.
Later, their debut album, "Cooleyhighharmony," was released in 91, six years after their foundation. The album had a drum-heavy new jack swing style with multi-layered sampled backdrops, similar to Bell Biv DeVoe's style but with classic-soul vocals. Different from other R&B groups, Boyz II Men had all of its members as lead singers, which became something unique and original from Boyz II Men.
After "Cooleyhighharmony," "Christmas Interpretations" came out in 1993, and later "II" in 1994. The album sold over 12 million copies only in the U.S. and became one of the best-selling R&B albums of all time. The album's success didn't stop there, Boyz II Men also won two Grammy Awards because of the album.
In 1999, Boyz II Men were reassigned to a new record deal (At that time, the group was managed by Motown, which merged with Universal Records). The album "Nathan Michael Shawn Wanya," was released in 2000 and was released with the main goal of updating their style. The album sold 500k copies in the U.S. Some songs got attention from the media, but it didn't become radio hits.
In 2007, the group (now re-signed with Universal) released "Motown: A Journey Through Hitsville USA." Despite the bad performance of their last album, this new album was definitely a hit. It received two Grammy nominations in 2009 for Best R&B Album and Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals for "Ribbon in the Sky."
With Boyz II Men becoming a global hit, in 2019 they announced an Asia Tour, performing in cities like Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok. The Asia Tour happened right after the U.S. Tour.
