Jason Joel Desrouleaux, better known by his stage name Jason Derulo, is an American singer and songwriter. He was born on September 21, 1989 in Miramar, Florida. Derulo grew up in a Haitian immigrant family in Florida, even speaking Creole as his first language. He took a serious interest in music early on, performing in his school whenever he could, and writing songs since he was 8. As a teenager, he wrote the song "Bossy" for rapper Birdman, and was featured on the track as a singer as well. He used the stage name "Jason Derulo", which is just his last name spelled phonetically.
Derulo started writing for many big-name artists, including Diddy, Sean Kingston, and Lil Wayne, while he also started to have ambitions as a solo performer. In 2006, he won the grand prize at the season finale of the cult classic variety show "Showtime at the Apollo". Soon after, he was signed by Warner Bros. Records. His debut single came out in 2009, with the title "Whatcha Say", which eventually climbed to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 Singles chart.
His self-titled debut album, "Jason Derulo", came out in February 2010. It became a hit, peaking at the #11 spot on Billboard 200. The standout tracks on the record were the aforementioned "Whatcha Say" and "Ridin' Solo". As a result, he got to go on his first international Jason Derulo concert tour, sponsored by AOL AIM.
Since then, Derulo has put out 3 more full studio albums, thus he has 4 in total. The best selling one among them has remained his first one from 2010, which sold 315,000 copies in the US alone. Meanwhile, the latest new Jason Derulo album came out back in June 2015, with the title "Everything is 4".
The biggest hits in the Jason Derulo setlist to date are "Wiggle" (2013) featuring Snoop Dogg, "Talk Dirty" (also 2013) featuring 2 Chainz, "Want to Want Me" (2014), and "Swalla" (2017) featuring Nicki Minaj. He was also featured on 2018 hit song by Sofia Reyes "1, 2, 3", alongside La Ghetto. In the 2010's internet culture, Derulo singing his own name at the beginning of his songs became a rather popular meme. Nowadays, he has a huge following on the new social media platform TikTok.
