Frederick Dierks Bentley is an American country singer and songwriter. He was born on November 20, 1975 in Phoenix, Arizona. Bentley excelled in education: he went to prestigious high schools in Indiana, then New Jersey. After graduating high school, he got into University of Vermont (UVM) as an English major, but he transferred to Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee so he can be in the country music center of the world. He got his college degree in 1997. His biggest early musical influence was hearing Hank Williams Jr’s country song “Man to Man”, which is a conversation between a dead father and his son.
After getting done with school, Bentley got a job as a researcher, studying and trying to find footage of old country music performances, at the cable TV channel The Nashville Network. In the meantime, he was writing his own music and performing the earliest versions of a Dierks Bentley concert in Nashville. He was able to produce his album by funding it with a loan on his producer’s car. In August 2003, that album, the self-titled “Dierks Bentley” was released by Capitol Records. It became a hit, peaking at the #4 spot on Billboard’s country music charts, and the #26 spot on the overall Billboard 200 chart.
Since then, Bentley has put out 8 more studio albums, thus he has 9 in total. The best selling one among them so far has been his second one, “Modern Day Drifter” from May 2005, which sold 1.5 million copies in the US alone. Meanwhile, the latest new Dierks Bentley album is titled “The Mountain”, which came out in June 2018.
Dierks Bentley’s biggest hits to date are “What Was I Thinkin'" (2003), “Drunk On a Plane” (2014), “Somewhere on a Beach” (2016), and “Burning Man” (2018) featuring Brothers Osborne. In 2005, at age 29, Bentley became the youngest member ever of Grand Ole Opry, a country music radio show that has been running since 1925 and has been awarding the biggest country music stars with honorary memberships to their ranks since their start.
