Kenny Chesney Biography

Kenny Chesney is an American singer, songwriter, and guitarist. He was born on March 26, 1968 in Maynardville, Tennessee. Chesney grew up in a lower middle class family in Knoxville, TN. He taught himself how to play guitar on a guitar he got for Christmas from his parents as a teenager. After graduating from college with a degree in advertising, he recorded a demo album that he sent out to labels. He also started to perform in local bars.

In 1992, Chesney got signed by Opryland Music Group as a songwriter. In April 1994, his debut album as a solo artist was released by another label, Capricorn Records. It was titled “In My Wildest Dreams”. It became a moderate industry success, with 2 singles on it reaching the top 100 on the country music charts in the US. Those two tracks were “Whatever It Takes” and "The Tin Man". Also, the album peaked at the #37 spot in Billboard’s new artists category.

Since Capicorn shut down their country music division in Nashville, Chesney signed with yet another label, BNA records. They released his second studio album, “All I Need to Know”, in June 1995. However, the first album of his that was able to make it to the not genre-specific famous Billboard 200 chart was his third one, “Me and You”, released in June 1996. It got to the #78 spot.

Since then, the prolific Chesney has released 16 more studio album, thus he has 19 (!) in total. The best selling one so far has been “No Shirt, No Shoes, No Problem” from 2002 with around 4 million copies sold worldwide. Meanwhile, his latest  record was “Here and Now”, which came out in May 2020.

The Tennessean country music star’s biggest hits to date are “There Goes My Life” (2004), “Don’t Blink” (2007), and “American Kids” (2014).

Chesney has won country music’s most coveted title, the Country Music Association's “Entertainer of the Year” award four times, in 2004, 2006, 2007, and 2008. He is currently second on the all time list with his four wins, behind Garth Brooks’ six.
