Deftones Biography

Formed in Sacramento, USA, Deftones is an iconic alternative metal band founded in 88. The band features frontman Chino Moreno, guitarist Stephen Carpenter, and drummer Abe Cunningham. The band received the nickname of "the Radiohead of Metal." Their debut album "Adrenaline" came out in 1995, followed by "Around the Fur" in 1997, which saw chart success. In the early 2000s, the band shifted to a more experimental style with the song "White Pony," the style shift ended up being a huge success with singles like "Change (In the House of Flies)," winning a Grammy.

When Stephen Carpenter was 15, he started playing guitar by listening to thrash metal bands like Anthrax and Metallica. Carpenter, Chino Moreno, and Cunningham attended the same high-school in Sacramento and shared the same love for music and skateboarding.

Carpenter's heavy metal influences meshed with Moreno's passion for hardcore punk and bands like Depeche Mode and The Cure. They began jamming together in Carpenter's garage around 1988, later joined by bassist Dominic Garcia and eventually Chi Cheng on bass after Garcia switched to drums.

Deftones' debut album, "Adrenaline," was recorded at Bad Animals Studio in Seattle, Washington, and released in 95. The album saw modest commercial success but gained a strong following through extensive touring and word-of-mouth promotion, eventually selling over 220k copies.

Deftones' second album, "Around the Fur," released in 97, the album was dedicated to Dana Wells, stepson of Max Cavalera of Sepultura, Soulfly, and Cavalera Conspiracy, with whom Deftones collaborated on the track "Headup" as a tribute. Despite not yet officially joining the band, Frank Delgado was credited for audio on five album tracks.

In 2000, Deftones released their third album, "White Pony," the album debuted at No. 3 on the U.S. Billboard chart with first-week sales of 178k copies. Frank Delgado, now a full-time member, introduced new musical elements. Tracks like the melancholic "Teenager" marked a departure in style.

Deftones started working on their fourth album under the working title "Lovers." Chi Cheng mentioned they aimed to explore heavier musical directions. Chino Moreno, after damaging his vocal cords on tour in 2001, underwent vocal training as a precaution.

In 2008, Chi Cheng suffered serious injuries in a car accident in Santa Clara, leaving him in a minimally conscious state. Updates on Cheng's condition were shared via the Deftones blog by bandmates and his mother, Jeanne. By 2009, it was clear Cheng had not made significant progress, prompting the band to announce Sergio Vega, formerly of Quicksand, as his temporary replacement. In 2013, Chi Cheng unfortunately passed away in a Stockton, California hospital due to cardiac arrest, following complications from his 2008 accident.

In 2013, while Chino Moreno toured with his side project Crosses to support their debut album, the rest of Deftones started writing a follow-up to Koi No Yokan. They aimed to record a new album either in late 2014 or early 2015. On April 13, 2014, the first anniversary of Chi Cheng's death, Deftones released a track from their shelved album Eros titled "Smile."

As of today, the band is still rocking. Recently, Chino Moreno announced that Deftones have finished recording most of their tenth studio album instrumentally, with vocals still needing to be completed.
