In 1995, Toronto birthed a voice that would reshape R&B. Daniel Caesar - born Ashton Simmonds - grew up in Oshawa, singing in his father's church congregation. The son of a Jamaican pastor and gospel singer, he soaked up soul and gospel through both music and faith, though his parents kept a watchful eye on music's temptations.
Life made a quick turn when he was 17: after having a fight with his father over his high school graduation weekend, Caesar was homeless. But that setback was actually the catalyst he needed to begin his musical journey. Linking up with producers Jordan Evans and Matthew Burnett, he crafted his debut EP "Praise Break" in 2014. Rolling Stone ranked it among the year's best R&B albums, and Noisey Canada marked it as one of 2014's standout projects.
His 2015 EP "Pilgrim's Paradise" turned industry heads, with his cover of Kanye's "Street Lights" - renamed "Streetcar" - becoming a fan favorite. But 2017's "Freudian" changed everything. The album earned two Grammy nods and spawned hits like "Get You" and "Best Part," with the latter bringing home a Grammy for Best R&B Performance.
"Case Study 01" followed in 2019, featuring heavyweight collaborations with Brandy, Pharrell, and John Mayer. Then came "Peaches" with Justin Bieber and Giveon in 2021, shooting Caesar to his first Billboard Hot 100 number one. His 2023 album "Never Enough" marked a new chapter, signing with Republic Records and expanding his sound.
Behind those silky vocals lies a deeper artistry. Merging soul and gospel with R&B and electronics, Caesar weaves elements of faith, philosophy, and love throughout his words. Closely aligned with both Evans and Burnett through his Golden Child Recordings imprint, he's part of the hotly tipped Toronto scene that has also spawned both River Tiber and BadBadNotGood. From church choirboy to chart-topper, Daniel Caesar pushes limits but never truly leaves his roots behind.
