Belcalis Marlenis Almánzar, better known by her stage name Cardi B, is an American rapper and songwriter. She was born on October 11, 1992 in New York City, New York. Cardi B was born into a family of Caribbean islander descent in the Bronx, and she spent a lot of time with her paternal grandmother growing up. She claimed to have been a member of the gang Bloods as a teenager. Her stage name is derived from the rum brand Bacardi, which is an old nickname of hers.
She went to the Renaissance High School for Musical Theater & Technology in New York. After graduating, she worked in a deli for a while, then after being fired, as a stripper. However, she later described her experience working at a strip club as pleasant. In the meantime, she started posting content on the social media sites Instagram and Vine in 2013.
In 2015, she got cast on the reality show “Love & Hip Hop: New York” on VH1. She became the breakout star of the show. She parlayed that attention to her music career. Later that year, Cardi B was featured on Jamaican reggae fusion singer Shaggy's remix to his single "Boom Boom". She also released her own debut single, “Cheap Ass Weave”.
Her debut album, titled “Invasion of Privacy”, came out in April 2018 through the major American label Atlantic Records. It became a massive hit, topping the famous Billboard 200 chart in the US. This is the only full studio album Cardi B has released so far. In late 2021 and early 2022, she stated she is working on a new record that she’s planning on putting out in 2022, but there is no official release date as of yet.
Cardi B’s biggest hits to date are “I Like It” (2018) featuring Bad Bunny and J Balvin, “Bodak Yellow” (also 2018), and “WAP” (2020) featuring Megan Thee Stallion. She was also featured on the 2017 hit single by the pop band Maroon 5“Girls Like You”.
