Mariah Carey Biography

Mariah Carey is an American singer, songwriter, music producer, and actress. She was born on March 27, 1969 in Huntington, New York. Carey got her first name from her parents after the song "They Call the Wind Maria" from the 1951 musical “Paint Your Wagon”. Her mother was a retired opera singer and vocal coach. Evidently, her mother started to train Carey’s voice at a young age. In high school, she also started to write poetry and song lyrics. Even before graduating, she got regular work providing vocals for demo tapes by local New York artists, such as Gavin Christopher and Ben Margulies. After getting her high school diploma, she studied to be a beauty industry worker and worked as a backup singer to freestyle singer Brenda K. Starr.

In 1988, she met Columbia Records president Tommy Mottola through Starr. She seized on the opportunity to give him one of her demo tapes. Mottola was extremely impressed after listening to it, however, Carey never gave any of her contact info to him by accident. This resulted in the head of the major record label spending two weeks trying to track her down. He finally found her, and thus Carey was eventually signed by Columbia.

In 1990, Carey performed the song “America the Beautiful” at the NBA finals. Her self-titled debut album, “Mariah Carey” was released in June 1990. It became a massive hit, topping the famous Billboard 200 chart upon its release.

The American R&B superstar has released a total of 15 studio albums during her long career. The best selling one among them is her third one, “Music Box” from August 1993, which sold a whopping 28 million copies worldwide. After the record's release, she went on her very first nationwide Mariah Carey concert tour. The latest new Mariah Carey album came out in November 2018, with the title “Caution”. Carey is one of the best selling musical artists of all time, having sold 220 million units of her songs and albums cumulatively over the years. She also has the distinction of being the only artist in music history to have one of her singles hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart in four different decades.

Mariah Carey’s biggest hits to date are “Without You” (1993), the holiday classic “All I Want for Christmas is You” (1994), “When You Believe” (1998) featuring Whitney Houston, and “We Belong Together” (2005). Check where the next Mariah Carey concert is taking place on the page above.
