50 Cent Biography

Curtis James Jackson III, better known by his stage name 50 Cent, is an American rapper. music producer, actor, and businessman. He was born on July 6, 1975 in New York City, New York.

Jackson had a very troubled childhood. His father left and his drug dealer mother died when he was just 8. Thus, he was brought up by his maternal grandmother. As a teenager, he got into boxing and, alas, selling crack cocaine. Subsequently, he was arrested and did his GED during his 6-month jail sentence.

After his release, Jackson got into rapping. He recorded some songs in the basement of his friend. Through another friend of his, he met record producer Jam Master Jay. He taught him all the technicalities of rapping and the music industry, and even featured him on the 1998 song by Onyx “React”. 50 Cent and Jam Master Jay produced an unreleased album together in 1999.

50 Cent still had quite a few speedbumps before hitting mainstream success. He first signed with a major label, Colombia Records, in 2000, while recovering in a hospital from gunshot wounds he sustained during a robbery. However, he was quickly dropped because of the controversy about a song he put out a year before, “Ghetto Qu’ran”

After the setback, 50 Cent was forced to move to Canada to further pursue his music career. A mixtape he produced there got American hip hop superstar Eminem’s attention. He introduced him to Dr. Dre who signed him in a million-dollar deal.

Thus, at last, 50 Cent’s debut studio album was released in February 2003, with the title “Get Rich or Die Tryin'”. It was an immense success, reaching the much-coveted #1 spot on the Billboard 200 list. It sold 8.4 million copies in the US alone.

Since then, 50 Cent released 4 more studio albums, thus he has 5 in total. However, no new 50 Cent album has been released since 2014’s “Animal Ambition”. The best selling one among them has remained his debut album “Get Rich or Die Tryin’”.

The biggest hits on the 50 Cent setlist to date are “In Da Club” (2003), “P.I.M.P” featuring Snoop Dogg and G-Unit (also 2003),  “Candy Shop” featuring Olivia (2005), and “Just a Lil Bit” (also 2005).

He’s also dabbled in acting, appearing in such movies as “Escape Plan” (2013) and “Spy” (2015).
