Djent is a subgenre of heavy metal that emerged in the early 2000s. It is characterized by its distinctive guitar sound, rhythmic complexity, and polyrhythms. Djent music typically features low-tuned guitars, palm-muted riffs, and syncopated rhythms, creating a heavy and aggressive sound. The term "djent" was coined to mimic the sound made by palm-muting on the guitar. Fredrik Thordendal, the lead guitarist of the Swedish band Meshuggah, is credited with pioneering the djent technique. It's worth noting, however, that while Meshuggah is associated with the development of this technique, they did not coin the term "djent" itself. In a 2018 interview with Rauta, Meshuggah guitarist Mårten Hagström acknowledged and apologized for the band's unintentional role in creating the "djent" style of guitar playing, attributing it to "a drunk misunderstanding." The djent scene has experienced rapid growth, with original online community members, including bands like Chimp Spanner, Sithu Aye, and Monuments, progressing to commercial success through tours and album releases. The influence of djent extends to other bands such as A Life Once Lost, Veil of Maya, Vildhjarta, and Xerath. Born of Osiris has been noted for drawing inspiration from the djent movement as well. MUSICALITY
Musically speaking, djent is known for its heavy, chugging guitar riffs and intricate rhythm patterns. The genre often incorporates complex time signatures, polymeters, and technical guitar-playing techniques. Djent bands frequently use extended-range guitars, such as 7-string or 8-string guitars, to achieve lower tunings and greater sonic depth. Djent music draws influences from progressive metal, math rock, and groove metal.
THEMES
Lyrically, djent music explores a variety of themes, including introspection, existentialism, social and political issues, and personal struggles. The lyrics often delve into introspective and philosophical topics, reflecting the complexities of life and the human condition.
