Suicideboys, often stylized as $uicideboy$, is an American hip hop duo. They were formed in 2014 in New Orleans, Louisiana. The founding and only members to ever be part of the group are cousins Aristos “Ruby da Cherry” Petrou (born in 1992 in New Orleans, Louisiana), and Scott “Scrim” Arceneaux Jr. (1989, Marrero, Louisiana).
Scrim started DJ’ing as a teenager, on his first laptop he bought with money he made by selling drugs. He continued to get DJ gigs throughout his years in community college. Da Cherry, meanwhile, learnt to play the violin at age 7 and learned to play the drums at age 10. He was part of some small-time punk bands from middle school onwards. In their early 20’s, the cousins teamed up to form the hip hop duo “Suicideboys”. The name comes from the rather bleak pledge they made together: that is, if they don’t succeed in the music industry, they’ll commit suicide together…
In their first year, they released 9 EP’s together that they uploaded to SoundCloud. They all had the phrase “Kill Yourself” in their titles. The first one to go viral was “$outh $ide $uicide”, which featured famous underground rapper Pouya on one of its tracks. They even did a series of $uicideboys$ concert shows with Pouya in 2016. The same year, their new EP “Radical $uicide” produced by EDM DJ Getter even got on Billboard’s Rap Albums chart, peaking at the #17 spot.
This all led to the Suicideboys debut album being released in September 2018 through the label Caroline Distribution, and with the title “I Want to Die in New Orleans”. It became a hit, peaking at the #9 spot on the famous Billboard 200 chart. Since then, they have released two more studio albums, thus they have 3 in total. The best selling one has remained their first one, “I Want to Die in New Orleans” from 2018, which sold over 30,000 copies in the US alone. Meanwhile, the latest new $uicideboy$ album came out in July 2022, with the title “Sing Me a Lullaby, My Sweet Temptation”.
The biggest hits in the $uicideboy$ setlist to date are “RUNNING THRU THE 7TH WITH MY WOADIES” (2015) featuring Pouya, “Paris” (also 2015), and “...And to Those I Love, Thanks for Sticking Around” (2020). Over the years, the alt hip hop duo has received a lot of criticism from music journalists for their morbid name, dark lyrical themes, and even devil-worshiping imagery in their music videos. However, despite that, they managed to survive and make a living in the music industry. Check where the next $uicideboy$ concert is playing near you on our page above.
