Eric Whitney, also known by his stage-name, Ghostemane, was born in Lake Worth, Florida and spent his early days shredding guitar in hardcore bands like Nemesis and Seven Serpents. But it was when a bandmate turned him on to Memphis rap that Ghostemane began an artistic metamorphosis that would rewrite the rules of underground music.
It wasn't until he had left the B2B sales job and moved to LA in 2015 that Whitney found his voice as Ghostemane. He joined Schemaposse, a collective which also included artists like Lil Peep, and started putting his metal roots onto trap beats. But it wasn't until he met Florida rapper Pouya that the wheels really began turning-the two's collaborative track "1000 Rounds" went viral, tallying millions upon millions of views.
Then came "Mercury: Retrograde" in 2017, with its haunting Betty Boop cartoon video that's now hit over 500 million views. With 2018's "N/O/I/S/E", he was in full florid flight, unleashing industrial metal influences that ran the gamut from Slipknot to Nine Inch Nails.
What really sets Ghostemane apart, however, is not just his genre-bending style but how he intermingles occult themes, nihilism, and raw emotion with influences that range from black metal legends Bathory to Southern rap pioneers Three 6 Mafia. He has also circled back to his metal roots with the project Baader-Meinhof, his lo-fi black metal.
