The Rolling Stones is one of the most important rock bands in the world and known by almost every human being on this Earth. The band was formed in 1962 in London, and have been a dominant force in the music scene for over seven decades. With Mick Jagger and Keith Richards at the helm of songwriting, the band transitioned from covers to creating legendary hits like "Satisfaction" and "Paint It Black" during the British Invasion of the 1960s.
The Rolling Stones rocked with albums like "Aftermath." Later albums like "Sticky Fingers" and "Exile on Main St." made them rock legends. Despite changes in the band, they kept going strong, releasing hits like "Some Girls" and "Tattoo You." Their huge world tours proved they were one of the biggest live acts.
Originally known as "the Rollin' Stones," the band made their debut in July 1962 with Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Brian Jones, Ian Stewart, and Tony Chapman. As time passed, Bill Wyman took over bass duties from Dick Taylor, and Charlie Watts became the permanent drummer. They started by touring the UK, showing off their blues roots and covering artists like Chuck Berry.
In 1965, The Rolling Stones released their second album, "The Rolling Stones No. 2," which quickly hit number 1 on the charts. The US version, "The Rolling Stones, Now!" followed very quickly, reaching number 5. During this time, they embarked on a successful tour in Australia and New Zealand, performing for thousands of fans. Their single "The Last Time," written by Jagger/Richards, topped the UK charts and reached number 9 in the US, setting the stage for the band's future successes.
The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus, filmed in 1968, was a groundbreaking concert event featuring stars like John Lennon, Eric Clapton, and The Who. Shelved for nearly three decades, it was officially released in 1996, with a DVD version following in October 2004, giving fans a chance to experience this iconic moment in music history.
In late 2001, Mick Jagger released his fourth solo album, "Goddess in the Doorway," met with mixed reviews. Following the September 11 attacks, Jagger, Keith Richards, and a backing band performed at The Concert for New York City. In 2002, The Rolling Stones marked their forty-year milestone with "Forty Licks," a double album of greatest hits and new tracks, selling over 7 million copies worldwide and reaching number 2 in the US and UK charts.
Another iconic thing of the band (one of many) is their logo, the tongue and lips design, hailed by VH1 as the greatest album cover ever in 2003, has become synonymous with The Rolling Stones. It has adorned all their albums and singles since 1970, as well as their merchandise and stage sets, cementing its status as a timeless symbol of the band's identity.
In 2023, reports hinted at a new Stones album, possibly titled "Hackney Diamonds," after an ad in the Hackney Gazette. The band confirmed it on social media and announced the album's release on 6 September 2023 during a Q&A with Jagger, Richards, and Wood, hosted by Jimmy Fallon. Set for 20 October 2023, the album includes Charlie Watts' final recordings and features former bassist Bill Wyman on one track. The lead single "Angry" and its video premiered during the Q&A and appeared on the EA Sports FC 24 soundtrack. Jagger mentioned they were already working on a follow-up to Hackney Diamonds.
