Stray Kids Biography

Stray Kids, spelled 스트레이 키즈 in Korean and often abbreviated to SKZ, is a South Korean hip hop-pop band. They were formed in 2017 in Seoul, South Korea. The original members were vocalist, rapper and producer Bang Chan (born in 1997 in Seoul, South Korea), vocalist and dancer Lee Know (1998, Daegot-myeon, South Korea), rapper and producer Changbin (1999, Bora-dong, South Korea), rapper and dancer Hyunjin (2000, Seoul, South Korea), vocalist and rapper Han (2000, Incheon, South Korea), rapper and dancer Felix (2000, Sydney, Australia), vocalist Seungmin (2000, Seoul, South Korea), vocalist I.N (2001, Busan, South Korea), and vocalist Woojin (1997, Bucheon, South Korea).

In August 2017, JYP Entertainment announced the launch of their new reality show “Stray Kids”, in which contestants compete to be part of the new boy band by the same name. The successful K-pop girl group "Twice" was formed with the same concept two years earlier. The show ended in December 2017, and thus the fresh new 9-member hop hop/K-pop band was formed.

By that time, Stray Kids had already released their first single, along with a music video, titled “Hellevator”. Their debut EP (Extended Play) came out in January 2019, with the less than imaginative title “Mixtape”. The same year, they went on their first worldwide Stray Kids concert tour. However, before they even released their first full studio album, the oldest of the original members announced his departure. In late 2019, Woojin decided to leave the band behind, for unclear reasons. The official statement simply read “personal circumstances” as his reason for parting ways.

SKZ’s debut album came out in June 2020, with the title “Go Live”. It became quite a hit, topping the charts in their home country of South Korea, while also peaking at the #4 spot on Billboard’s World Albums chart. Their second album, “Noesy”, was released in August 2021. It performed very similarly to their first record on the charts. Meanwhile, they've already announced the new Stray Kids album: “Maxident” is set to hit the shelves in October 2022.

The Stray Kids’ biggest hits to date are “"神메뉴” (meaning “God’s Menu” in English, 2020), “MIROH” (2020), “Back Door” (also 2020), and “소리꾼” (“Thunderous”, 2021). The band remains popular all across Asia, not just Korea - a Stray Kids concert has a very good chance of filling an arena anywhere on the most populous continent.
