Santi White, better known by her stage name Santigold, is an American singer and songwriter. She was born on September 25th, 1976 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Santi has described herself as “super-social and a connector of people” in her youth, growing up in Philadelphia. She ended up earning a degree in music and African-American studies from Wesleyan University. After college, she got her first gig in the music industry, as an A&R (artist & repertoire) representative for the major American label Epic Records. In 2001, she executive produced American singer Les’soul record “How I Do”. She was also the lead singer for the punk rock band Stiffed between 2001 and 2006.
She took on her stage name, “Santigold”, after the nickname one of her teenage friends gave her. Her debut single under that name came out in early 2008, titled “Creator”. Santigold managed to break into the Billboard Hot 100 right away - her debut single peaked at the #44 spot. What’s more, her second song, “L.E.S. Artistes”, was ranked #2 on Rolling Stone’s Singles of the Year list.
Her maiden full-length album, the self-titled “Santigold”, came out in April 2008. It became a moderate hit, peaking at the #74 spot on the famous Billboard 200 chart in the US, but ranked as high as #2 on the genre-specific Dance/Electronic Albums chart.
Overall, Santigold has put out a total of 4 full-length studio albums during her career. The best selling one among them has remained her first one, “Santigold” from 2008, which sold over 225,000 copies in the United States alone. Meanwhile, the latest new Santigold album was released in September 2022, with the title “Spirituals”.
The biggest hits in the Santigold setlist to date are the aforementioned “L.E.S. Artistes” (2008), “Shove It” (also 2008), “Disparate Youth” (2012), and “Go!” (also 2012). She was also featured on the 2009 track “Gifted” by the hip hop collective N.A.S.A, along with Kanye West and Lykke Li.
