Widely known for his single "Gangnam Style," PSY, whose real name is Park Jae-sang, is a singer born in Seoul, South Korea. PSY made his name with his very creative and unique style of making humorous and satirical performances. Gangnam Style was so popular that its catchy refrain got listed in The Yale Book of Quotations as one of the top quotes of 2012, with the song exceeding one billion views on YouTube (As of 2021).
PSY comes from a very important family in the Gangnam District of Seoul. He belongs to the Milyang Park clan. His father, Park Won-Ho, is the executive chairman of DI Corporation, a company that makes semiconductor manufacturing equipment listed on the Korea Exchange.
Even though PSY was raised in a family that had strong business connections and culture, his passion for music was bigger. And it all started when little PSY was watching a Queen concert on the TV. When the band performed "Bohemian Rhapsody," PSY said it was this particular footage that sparked his love for music.
As his father was preparing him to take over the company board, PSY went to Boston, USA, to study business administration, but his love for music was so big, that he didn't even start his studies, PSY got so involved in the music scene in the US that he ended up spending all his time linking with local musicians.
After that, PSY registered himself in the Berklee College of Music, to get himself deeper into the music universe. However, he dropped out and returned to South Korea to pursue a career as a singer. PSY was discovered by the rapper zoPD and featured in the song "카사노바" from his second album in 1999. Psy's debut on Korean national television was in 2000 after his dancing caught the attention of a TV producer.
In 2012, Psy released his sixth album, "Psy 6 (Six Rules), Part 1." His song "Gangnam Style" started getting famous outside Asia. By August 14, it was the top video on YouTube. On August 21, it became No. 1 on iTunes, beating songs by Justin Bieber and Katy Perry. This was a big deal for a South Korean artist. Celebrities like Britney Spears, and Tom Cruise tweeted about it, showing their excitement.
For those who don't know, Gangnam is a district in Seoul known for being home to South Korea's rich and famous. The "Gangnam Style" is a term that describes a lifestyle linked to being fashionable, cool, and rich.
Even throughout a life of accomplishments, PSY also had struggles and controversies. In 2010, Psy released his fifth album, "PsyFive," with its lead single "Right Now." However, South Korea's Ministry of Gender Equality and Family banned the song from under-19 audiences due to what it considered an "obscene" lyric: "Life is like toxic alcohol." Facing financial struggles, Psy found himself unable to release his own songs. At this challenging time, his wife encouraged him to join the South Korean music label YG Entertainment.
Until today PSY is a super trendy artist in South Korea, and his concerts are always sold out.
Proving that business is in his blood, Psy started his own entertainment company called P Nation. In January 2019, he announced the first artist signed to his label, the rapper Jessi. As of 2024, PSY's net worth is at $60 million.
