Formed in Saarbrücken, Germany, Powerwolf is a power metal band known for a very unique gothic style. The band was formed in 2003 but debuted their first album, "Return in Bloodred," in 2005, which immediately received positive reviews from heavy metal critics. Even through some struggles and line-up changes, Powerwolf kept releasing some killer albums. "Preachers of the Night" released in 2013, is one of them. As of 2024, Powerwolf is not only famous in Germany, but all over Europe, and is considered to be one of the bands that are shaping the modern generation of power metal, and now has just released one more album, called "Wake Up the Wicked," which is now the band's tenth album.
Powerwolf was officially formed by the brothers Charles and Matthew Greywolf, who eventually added the drummer Stéfane Funèbre and keyboardist Falk Maria Schlegel. Powerwolf's members adopted pseudonyms and created backstories, which brought a very unique visual for them. They later found vocalist Attila Dorn in Romania. After that, they quickly debuted with the album "Return in Bloodred."
In 2007, they released their second album, "Lupus Dei," and in 2008, their third album, "Bible of the Beast." Two years later, in 2010, Stéfane Funèbre, the drummer, left the power metal band and was replaced by Tom Diener. One year later, in 2011, Tom was succeeded by Roel van Helden.
In 2014, Powerwolf decided to take some different creative decisions and released "The History of Heresy I" and "The History of Heresy II," which featured orchestral versions of their songs. In 2018, the group released their seventh album, "The Sacrament of Sin," which was announced one year before. Once again, the album brought very unique and different elements from what Powerwolf's fans have seen before, and of course, the album was extremely successful, topping German charts and winning the German Metal Hammer "Best Album of the Year" award.
That same year, the metal band embarked on a European tour to support the album, which ended in 2019. With the success of the band and their music reaching new horizons, they embarked on a Latin America Tour in 2020, together with Amon Amarth, and North America Tour two years later.
Something very interesting about them is that their costumes usually change each album, so fans are often very excited about the release of new albums. Also, their fans often call them "The Wolves."
