Pink Martini Biography

Imagine a band born because a political activist thought fundraiser music was too boring - that's how Thomas Lauderdale started Pink Martini in 1994, creating what they lovingly call a "little orchestra" that turns musical genres into a cocktail all its own. When he called up his Harvard classmate China Forbes to join, he probably didn't expect they'd end up performing everywhere from the Cannes Film Festival to Carnegie Hall, but sometimes the best musical recipes come from unexpected ingredients.

Forbes might only speak one language, but she sings in 15! The band's shows feel like a musical passport, whisking you from a Rio carnival to a 1930s French music hall in the blink of an eye. With 10-12 musicians on stage, they're proving American music can be a melting pot of global sounds, serving up classical, Latin, and others.

Their debut album "Sympathique" was so good it had the French nominating them for awards - not bad for a Portland band that started at political fundraisers! They've been globe-trotting ever since, collecting gold records across many countries like some people collect postcards. Whether they're playing with world-class orchestras at the Hollywood Bowl or serenading astronauts on the International Space Station (yes, really!).

The band's evolution has been as colorful as their repertoire. They've performed at the grand opening of Disney Concert Hall, rocked New Year's Eve at the remodeled Museum of Modern Art, and even played the Governor's Ball at the Academy Awards. Each album adds new flavors to their musical cocktail - from the holiday cheer of "Joy to the World" to the cross-cultural celebration of "1969" with Japanese singer Saori Yuki.

They've faced their share of challenges, including the tragic loss of Derek Rieth in 2014, but they've channeled their grief into good through the Derek Rieth Foundation, empowering youth through music and dance. From collaborating with everyone from Rufus Wainwright to the original cast of Sesame Street, to having their songs pop up in shows like "The Sopranos" and "Better Call Saul."

From Portland to Paris, from political fundraisers to the Academy Awards' Governor's Ball, Pink Martini shows that sometimes the best musical cocktails mix genres you never thought would go together. They're not just a band; they're a musical United Nations in evening wear, proving that great music truly is a universal language. With over 2.5 million albums sold worldwide and counting, they're still serving up the perfect musical nightcap for a world thirsty for something different.
