Pet Shop Boys Biography

Formed in London, UK, Pet Shop Boys is a very iconic synth-pop duo formed by the legends Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe. Over their very successful career, Pet Shop Boys sold over 100 million records globally and were named the most successful duo in UK music history by The Guinness Book of Records in 99. Pet Shop Boys got their popularity for creating a very sophisticated style of pop music. The duo also received the Outstanding Contribution to Music award at the 2009 Brit Awards and was named Billboard's top dance duo/group in 2016. One year later, they were honored with NME's Godlike Genius Award.

The two pop legends met in a London hi-fi shop in 1981, bonding over a shared love for disco and electronic music. At that time, inspired by groups like Soft Cell, the duo felt a unique connection and decided to start a band together. In 1983, Tennant met producer Bobby Orlando in New York and shared their demo, leading to the recording of tracks like "West End Girls." By 87, the group gained huge popularity and won many awards. Later after that, they collaborated with Dusty Springfield on "What Have I Done to Deserve This?"

One year later, Pet Shop Boys reached the peak of their success with the release of "Domino Dancing." Their third album, "Introspective," was also very well-received and led to the start of their first tour in 89. By the early 90s, "Behaviour," a more subdued album, was released and had the collaboration of artists like Dusty Springfield and Liza Minnelli. In the late 90s, Pet Shop Boys contributed to a charity album, and one year later, their album "Nightlife" came out. By 2006, the English duo remixed Madonna's "Sorry," which topped the UK charts and was featured on her tour.

After the release of a documentary about the duo, they released a live album, named "Concrete," in 2007. In 2012, Pet Shop Boys released "Elysium," which they started to produce one year before. After a world tour in 2013, they released "Super," which debuted at number three in the UK and topped the US Dance/Electronic Albums chart in 2016. In 2020, the pop duo released their fourteenth album, "Hotspot," and they embarked on The Dreamworld tour in 2022, which initially was postponed because of the 2019/2020 pandemic. The tour also included a Glastonbury performance.
