Parkway Drive is an Australian metal band. They were formed in 2003 in Byron Bay, Australia. The founding members were lead vocalist Winston McCall, lead guitarist Jeff Ling, rhythm guitarist Luke "Pig" Kilpatrick, bassist and backing vocalist Brett "Lagg" Versteeg, and drummer Ben "Gaz" Gordon.
The band’s name comes from the street the venue they used for practice was located on. The “Parkway House” was used by many other local metal bands as well, so it was a nice place to congregate for metal heads. The first ever Parkway Drive concert took place at the Byron Bay Youth Centre in 2003, in front of around 40-50 people. After the show, the band decided to team up with another metal group present, “I Killed the Prom Queen”. They put out a joint EP later that year, which fans usually refer to as “the Split CD”.
The first Parkway Drive EP per se came out in 2004, titled “Don’t Close Your Eyes”. Soon after its release, they got signed by the Australian indie label Resist Records. Their debut album came out in September 2005, with the title “Killing with a Smile”. It peaked at the #39 spot on the Australian ARIA charts. Their second record, “Horizons” from 2007, got into the top 10 at #6; while their 5th one, “Ire” from 2015, didn’t stop until it hit #1 on the Australian charts.
Overall, the Aussie metal band has put out 7 full studio albums during their career. The best selling one among them is “Atlas” from October 2012, which sold 63,000 copies in the US and around an additional 35,000 in their home country. Meanwhile, the latest new Parkway Drive album came out in September 2022, with the title “Darker Still”.
The biggest hits in the Parkway Drive setlist to date are “Dark Days” (2012), “Wild Eyes” (2013), “Vice Grip” (2015), and “Crushed” (also 2015). In April 2022, the band caused a bit of a stir after they decided to cancel their North American Parkway Drive concert tour scheduled for May-June that year due to mental health issues. Thankfully, the band members worked their differences out through group therapy sessions, similar to what the legendary metal band Metallica did in the early 2000s.
Now, the band is back together, going on tours and recording new music. Their current line-up is made up of 4 of the 5 founders, lead singer McCall, guitarists Gil and Kilpatrick, and drummer Gordon; as well as the one “new guy”, bassist Jia "Pie" O'Connor.
