Mötley Crüe Biography

Mötley Crüe is an American heavy metal band. They were formed in 1981 in Los Angeles, California. The founding members were bassist Nikki Sixx (1958, San Jose, California), drummer Tommy Lee (1962, Athens, Greece), lead guitarist Mick Mars (1951, Terre Haute, Indiana), and lead singer Vince Neil (1961, Hollywood, California).

In 1981, Sixx left the heavy metal band “London”. He started rehearsing with Lee and a vocalist-guitarist named Greg Leon who left them shortly after. So, Sixx and Lee went out searching for new band members. They came across an ad Mars placed in a local LA paper, announcing his availability as a “loud, rude and aggressive guitar player”. They also had guitarist Robin Moore on board, but he was fired after the first rehearsal. Lee knew Neil from high school, so he asked him to join as lead singer. Thus, the original line-up of Mötley Crüe was finally together. The first ever Mötley Crüe concert was played on April 24, 1981 at the Starwood nightclub in West Hollywood, California.

The band’s name is derived from the phrase “motley looking crew”, something Mars heard some musicians call a band named “White Horse”. Their debut album came out within a year of their formation. “Too Fast for Love” was released by the band’s own label, Leathür Records, in November 1981. It managed to get onto the famous Billboard 200 chart, reaching the #77 spot. As a result, the band was signed by Elektra Records. Still in the same year, they got to embark on their first nationwide Mötley Crüe concert tour, called the “Boys in Action Tour”.

Since then, Mötley Crüe has released 8 more studio albums, thus they have 9 in total. The best selling one among them is “Dr. Feelgood” from September 1989, which sold 6.6 million copies worldwide. Meanwhile, the latest new Mötley Crüe album came out in June 2008, with the title “Saints of Los Angeles”.

The Californian metal band’s biggest hits to date are “Home Sweet Home” (1981), “Wild Side” (1987), and “Kickstart My Heart" (1989). The band announced their retirement at the end of 2015. However, in 2018, they reversed that decision and went back to writing new music and touring. After some changes, Mötley Crüe’s current line-up is still made up of the 4 founders.

In 2001, Mötley Crüe members collectively wrote the autobiography of the band titled “The Dirt: Confessions of the World's Most Notorious Rock Band”. It became a best seller, and even a movie adaptation was produced by Netflix in 2019.
