Missy Elliott Biography

Born in Portsmouth and widely known in the hip-hop universe, Melissa Arnette "Missy" Elliott, AKA, Missy Elliott or Misdemeanor, is a rapper and singer. Missy Elliott started her career in the 1990s with the R&B group Sista and worked with Timbaland on successful projects for other artists. As a solo artist, her debut album "Supa Dupa Fly" was a hit, followed by more successful albums like "Da Real World."

Missy Elliott was raised by her mother, a power company dispatcher, and her father, a former Marine, Melissa grew up in a musical household active in the church choir singing gospel. She showed an early talent for performance, singing for her family from the age of four. The family moved between North Carolina and Virginia, facing financial hardships upon settling back in Virginia after her father's return from the Marines.

In 1988, Missy Elliott formed an R&B group and caught the attention of DeVante Swing of Jodeci in 1991 and signed to a major record label, releasing their debut track "Brand New" in 1993. During this time, Missy Elliott collaborated with Timbaland and Magoo.

Missy Elliott and Timbaland formed a successful songwriting and production team. They contributed significantly to Aaliyah's career, producing nine tracks on her hit album "One in a Million" in 96, she also made notable guest appearances on tracks by Sean "Puffy" Combs, MC Lyte, and New Edition in the mid-1990s.

Missy Elliott's second album, "Da Real World," released in 99, sold 1.5 million copies globally, showcasing a darker tone compared to her debut. The album featured hits like "All n My Grill" and remixes of "Hot Boyz" and "She's a Bitch". That same year, she collaborated with Nicole Wray and Big Boi on "All n My Grill", and appeared on the remix of Mariah Carey's "Heartbreaker."

In 2002, Missy Elliott and Timbaland shifted to an old-school sound for her fourth album, "Under Construction," which became the best-selling women's rap album with 2.1 million copies sold in the U.S. During this time, Elliott also collaborated with Madonna, Timbaland & Magoo, and contributed to the soundtrack of "Honey". She made headlines co-starring in a Gap commercial with Madonna and performed at the controversial 2003 MTV Video Music Awards alongside Britney Spears, and Christina Aguilera as well.
