Massive Attack Biography

Massive Attack was founded in Bristol, England, in 1988, emerging from the Wild Bunch sound system collective. The founding members were Robert "3D" Del Naja, Grant "Daddy G" Marshall, Andrew "Mushroom" Vowles, and Adrian "Tricky" Thaws. The group has since evolved into a duo consisting of Del Naja and Marshall, as of 2025.

The group created the genre of trip-hop with their groundbreaking album, "Blue Lines," released in 1991. The album is recognized as the first trip-hop album. It also features on the list of the "500 Greatest Albums of All Time" according to Rolling Stone. Their song "Unfinished Sympathy" achieved significant European success, topping the Dutch singles chart and subsequently ranking 63rd on the NME's list of the 100 best songs of all time.

After their 1994 Brit Award win for Protection, Tricky took a solo route. Mezzanine, their 1998 album, provided Massive Attack’s first No. 1 album in the UK, featuring "Teardrop," the theme music for House. Vowles left in 1999, but Del Naja and Marshall continued as a two-piece, releasing 100th Window (2003) and Heligoland (2010).

They have collaborated with vocalists like Horace Andy, Shara Nelson, and others. They have sold 13+ million records globally. They have won two MTV Europe Music Awards and two Q Awards. They are involved in various political, human rights, and environmental activities.
